First Edition: A Desk, a Board, and a Plan

Every publication should say what it is for in its first issue, so here it is.

This journal exists because building a chess platform generates a great deal of thinking that has nowhere to go. Why one training format works and another feels productive but isn't. What a famous game teaches when you strip the romance off it. Which habits actually separate the players who improve from the ones who play a great deal and stay exactly where they were.

That material belongs somewhere readable rather than buried in release notes.

What you can expect

Four sections, and we intend to keep them honest. Training covers method — how to practise, how to structure a session, what the evidence says about memory and skill. Tactics is the sharp end: calculation, patterns, the drills that build them. Culture is the game itself, its history and its manners. Product is the occasional note on what we have built and the reasoning behind it, written plainly enough that you can disagree with us.

Editions land Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Each is short — four or five minutes, the length of a coffee — because a chess column you never finish is a chess column that taught you nothing.

The idea underneath

One conviction runs through all of it: improvement in chess is far more available than most players believe, and far less mysterious. It is not a matter of talent revealing itself. It is a matter of practising the right small things often enough that they stop costing you attention — square colour, piece geometry, forcing moves, the four endgames that actually occur.

Do those, and the game opens up. Skip them and you can study openings for a decade without moving.
